Current Grant Opportunities
Grants in order of deadline, if known. The grants below are not administered by School's Out Washington.
The 100 Best Communities for Young People presented by ING is an annual competition, now in its sixth cycle, that rewards and recognizes communities making extraordinary efforts to reduce dropout rates and provide outstanding services and supports to their youth. These communities, while not without their own challenges to overcome, have demonstrated a significant and lasting commitment to their youth for which they deserve to be recognized and commended. Applications entered by May 1 are eligible for two awards. The final application Deadline: May 17, 2012.
The State Farm Youth Advisory Board
Grants will be awarded for service learning projects which better communities across the United States and Canada. Qualified educational institutions and nonprofits can apply for funding if they run youth projects relating to financial literacy, access to higher education/closing the education gap, community safety and natural disaster preparedness, environmental responsibility, and societal health and wellness issues. Projects should be designed so that youth are given the opportunity to serve and lead alongside adults or to create innovative solutions to public problems. The goal of the funding is to provide young people with civic skills and enhance their sense of connection to larger purposes. Deadline: May 4, 2012.
2012 ING Run For Something Better School Awards Program
Grants for up to $2,500 to address childhood obesity in the United States. The purpose of this funding opportunity is to establish school-based programs that engage students in physical activity. The funding must be used to establish or expand an existing school running program. The program must have a commitment of at least 25 students in grades 4th-8th in order to be eligible to apply. Deadline: May 5, 2012.
The Department of Commerce: The Child Care Facility Fund Grants
Grants for up to $20,000 to improve child care services in Washington. The purpose of this funding opportunity is to increase the availability of quality, affordable, convenient child care for working families. Through this RFP, grant funds can only be used to purchase developmentally-appropriate health and safety improvements or program equipment for child care facilities. Deadline: May 07, 2012.
Youth Build: The Employment and Training Administration (ETA), U.S. Department of Labor
Grants are available to public and private organizations nationwide for programs which will help disabled, at-risk, and other underprivileged youth (16-24 years) become successful citizens. Eligible programs will help these youth complete their high school education and prepare for employment, while, at the same time, engaging them in community service activities. This opportunity will also address issues facing low-income communities such as affordable housing, crime prevention, leadership development, education, and employment. Deadline: May 8, 2012.
Entertainment Software Association Foundation
The ESA Foundation is dedicated to supporting geographically diverse projects and programs that benefit American youth of all races and denominations and make a difference in the quality of their life, health and welfare. The Foundation seeks to harness the collective power of the interactive entertainment industry to create positive social impact in our communities, and supports. Maximum award: $50,000. Eligibility: 501(c)(3) organizations with programs that serve youths ages 7-18. Deadline: May 15, 2012.
The Afterschool Alliance and MetLife Foundation need your help identifying exemplary afterschool programs serving middle school youth to win a $10,000 MetLife Foundation Afterschool Innovator Award and to be featured in our 2012 series of issue briefs. Nominees are sought in categories of digital learning, the arts, parent involvement/engagement and school imporvement. Deadline: May 15, 2012.
Libri Foundation
The Libri Foundation is a nationwide non-profit organization which donates new, quality, hardcover children's books to small, rural public libraries in the United States through its BOOKS FOR CHILDREN program.Applications are accepted from independent libraries as well as libraries which are part of a county, regional, or cooperative library system. A library system may also apply if all the libraries in the system meet these requirements. Applications are accepted from school libraries only if they also serve as the public library. Application deadlines for 2012 are: (postmarked by) May 15th. Grants will be awarded May 31st.
Funds for Fuel Up to Play 60
Up to $4,000 per year is available to any qualifying K-12 school enrolled in Fuel Up to Play 60. The competitive, nationwide funding program can help your school jumpstart and sustain healthy nutrition and physical activity improvements. Deadline: June 1, 2012.
Columbia County Children's Fund
The Columbia County Children's Fund was established as a permanent legacy in 1984 by family members of Frances Broughton Boyd Milham of Dayton, Washington. The fund supports organizations in Columbia County, Washington that provide educational enrichment and special needs programs, guidance, counseling and therapy to children and their families, as well as medical and dental services and supplies for disadvantaged children. A committee comprised of individuals representing Columbia County recommends grants from this fund. Awards from this fund typically are less than $4,000. Deadline: June 26, 2012
The Stocker Foundation
The Stocker Foundation provides grants to organizations in King County, WA that move children in elementary school grades toward grade-level reading mastery including comprehensive intervention strategies, book distribution programs, programs that support emerging literacy and reading skills among children entering kindergarten and some limited funds towards services that help remove barriers to reading success. The next deadline for Letters of Inquiry is July 12, 2012.
The Portland Timbers Community Fund (PTCF), an advised fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, supports non-profits in Oregon and in Clark County in SW Washington. Grant seeking organizations must fall under one of the following areas of focus: Youth education, Youth sports, Youth health and fitness or environmental awareness and activism with youth and families. Letter of interest deadline: July 23, 2012.
Rolling Grants or Unknown Deadlines
The Hearst Foundations work with comprehensive direct-service organizations that foster effective solutions to social and economic problems. Priority is given to efforts that enable children, youth and families to lead productive and independent lives. The Foundations’ interest include family support services, domestic violence and child abuse prevention, after-school programs, youth development, literacy, housing and homelessness, job training, economic development, and programs for older adults. Deadline: Unknown.
- General Guidelines: We like to fund projects that have a positive impact in our communities and fulfill one or more of our funding priorities. Requests to support events and requests for food donations are also considered in this subset.
- Who reviews your request: The local Public Affairs Director considers local community funds.

The Foundation's primary interests within Education include programs that focus on formal K-12 education (particularly mathematics, science and reading), teacher development, literacy, and higher education.
Youth development programs supported by the Foundation typically include after-school educational enrichment programs that supplement and enhance formal education systems to increase the chances for successful outcomes in school and life. The Foundation is also interested in programs that attract female and minority students into the fields of mathematics, science, and technology. Deadline: Rolling.
Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation
The Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation provides direct support for children in the areas of health and wellness. The Foundation's goal is to provide grants to help many programs that are working hard to make the world a healthier and happier place for kids. For 2011, children's health and wellness grant applications will be accepted March to October and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Deadline: Rolling
GTECH After School Advantage Program
The GTECH After School Advantage Program is a national community investment program, which provides non-profit community agencies and public schools with state-of-the-art computer labs. These computer centers are designed to provide inner-city children aged five to 15 with a meaningful, yet fun, learning experience during the critical after-school hours, in a safe environment. It is currently estimated that there will be over 160 After School Advantage computer centers established throughout the United States by the end of 2011. GTECH will contribute, on average, $15,000 to each site. Deadling: Rolling
Road Map Project Small Grants Funds
The Road Map Project Small Grants Funds program is intended to support activities, events, and projects that build the capacity and leadership of local grassroots organizations and community stakeholders to participate in improving education results in South Seattle and South King County. Subject to fund availability, applications are accepted year-around and considered on a monthly basis. The new fund is a community engagement resource that provides small grants to coalitions, community groups, organizations and institutions who are committed to achieving the Road Map goal of improving education results from cradle to college and career. Awards will range from $500 to $5,000.
Lego Children's Fund
The LEGO Children’s Fund will provide quarterly grants for programs, either in part or in total, with a special interest paid to collaborative efforts and in providing matching funds to leverage new dollars into the receiving organization. The primary areas the fund supports are: Early childhood education and development that is directly related to creativity; and Technology and communication projects that advance learning opportunities. Each grant will be subject to a specified time frame for completion.
