Bridge Conference 2010
With youth involvement and an infusion of social technology throughout the conference, we’re making the most of the fantastic resources available to us through new technologies and relationships to bring you a conference unlike any other. Here is the 2010 Bridge Conference Program, which lists everything that will be happening at this year's conference. All conference attendees will receive this at the conference. The version here is low-resolution and is not intended to be printed. You can also view the sessions by age range and topic.
We are also holding a "Post Your Way to the 2010 Bridge Conference" contest on our Facebook page. It's easy to participate and someone will win a $100 scholarship to the conference. The contest ends August 31, 2010.
Each person has remarkable potential. Exposure and access to quality learning opportunities fuel individual passions and ignite minds. As educational leaders, we are called to address multiple issues across complex systems, guide reform efforts and, most importantly, dismantle longstanding barriers that have prevented equality and success.
Strengthening community partnerships involving schools, afterschool and youth development programs, businesses, and other concerned organizations and individuals is critical to addressing these ever-evolving issues and taking action on behalf of our young people grades K–12.
We recruit presenters and speakers from academic and research institutions, state and local governments, and other nationally recognized organizations to address emerging issues in the afterschool and youth development field. This conference is intended for any professional with a desire to learn more about the best practices and knowledge that support quality afterschool and youth development programming and partnerships with the formal school system.
Highlights will include:
Monday's opening address will be presented by the Philly Youth Poetry Movement. The Philly Youth Poetry Movement provides positive leadership, mentoring and creative outlets to encourage both at-risk and empowered youth ages 13-19 to use their words, image and vision to promote social change, cultural diversity, and to build self-esteem. They were one of the groups followed by Russell Simmons’ Brave New Voices documentary on HBO in 2009 and are participating again this year.
Tuesday’s opening address will take the form of a debate between Tiffany Cooper Gueye, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer, BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life) , and Paul Heckman, Ph.D., Associate Dean & Co-Director, CANDEL, and Professor, University of California of Davis, on the topic of data-driven program design and quantifying success. This debate, moderated by Eric Gurna, Executive Director, Development Without Limits, will explore the issue from different perspectives and promises to be a riveting and thought-provoking in-depth look at a complicated issue that impacts us all.
Monday night, the Bridge Conference will host an inspiring high-energy production showcasing the ways in which direct involvement with the afterschool and youth development (AYD) field engages and encourages young people’s passions. The evening event is open to all conference attendees free of charge and includes a substantial spread of hors d’oeuvres and a no-host bar.
