Expanded Learning Opportunities in Washington State: Pathways to Student Success
Prepared by Priscilla M. Little, Research & Evaluation Consultant
Presented at the Bridge Conference October 18, 2011

Educators and policymakers are rethinking when, where, and how children learn, to include a diverse range of learning settings such as afterschool and summer programs and workplace and virtual learning spaces, all of which can work in intentional alignment with schools to support student success. Collectively, these approaches are referred to as expanded learning opportunities (ELOs).

A Well-Prepared Workforce Brings Out the Best in Our Kids
Executive Summary
and Full Report

At the end of 2008, School’s Out Washington completed the first supply and demand study on afterschool and youth development programs in Washington State.  "The Supply & Demand for Afterschool and Youth Development Programs in Washington State" is a companion piece to the 2007 "A Well-Prepared Workforce Brings Out the Best in Our Kids" report.  Together, these two reports form a more complete picture of the afterschool field from the lens of the provider and the participant. The overarching goals of the supply and demand study were to gather comprehensive information on what programs exist, who they serve, and assess the demand for additional programs in the state.  The "Well-Prepared Workforce" report was the culminating report of a comprehensive study to determine the best ways to support Washington State’s afterschool and youth development (AYD) workforce and presents a framework for a professional development system for the AYD workforce in Washington State.
