Trainer & Coach Information
![]() |
School's Out Washington works with a talented and knowledgable pool of trainers and coaches who specialize in supporting programs and staff who work with school-age children and youth. The information on this page applies to those trainers and coaches and those people who might be interested in becoming a School's Out Trainer or Coach.
BECOMING A TRAINER OR COACH
Training and coaching offers the chance for seasoned professionals in the afterschool and youth development field to take their accumulated skills and knowledge and turn these into a solid area of expertise to share with others. If you have been in the field for a while and are looking for a new challenge for yourself, this may be just what you want.
Generally, trainers and coaches provide on-site training and technical assistance to assigned licensed afterschool programs, culturally specific programs, youth development programs and/or park and recreation programs for the purpose of enhancing the quality of services to children and youth. School’s Out seeks to match trainers to sites in response to the specific needs of each program.
Trainers and coaches work as independent contractors and the hours are part-time and can happen any time from early morning to evening to weekends, depending on the site's needs and the trainer or coach's availability. The length of a training contract with School's Out can vary from a one-time workshop contract to a year-long site assignment.
School's Out provides ongoing training and support for our trainers and coaches. Our trainers and coaches become experts in working with adult learners and delivering training and support effectively. Trainers and coaches also have access to the School's Out Resource Lending Library, which is chock-full of great books and ideas to support best training and coaching practices.
Some years we are fortunate enough to be able to run our Training Apprentice Program, which is another way to become a trainer or coach if you don't have as much experience in the field.
If you are curious about becoming a trainer or coach, or even if you just want to explore the possibility, please contact Glen Osborn. He's always happy to have an informational interview with interested folks. You can also read the Trainer & Coach Qualifications to get an idea for what we look for in a successful trainer or coach applicant.
TRAINERS MEETINGS
Monthly Trainer’s meetings are primarily for SOWA contracted trainers working at City of Seattle Human Services Division subsidized sites. Other SOWA contracted trainers and coaches are welcome to attend. For these trainers, their annual contract requires attendance at 5 or more of these meetings. Other SOWA contracted trainers and coaches are welcome to attend as well.
The format features a shared leadership model, peer support opportunities, and professional presentations related to trainer requests and City contract requirements. Community Partners and other invited guests occasionally attend and participate.
These meetings are usually held on the second Thursday of each month from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. at the School's Out Washington offices. Lunch-like snacks are provided and attendees are welcome to bring lunch with them.
There are a few exceptions to the usual schedule:
- There is a required all-day training of the trainers meeting, usually the 3rd Thursday in September, to kick off the contract year for City of Seattle Human Services Division funded onsite training. It is held at a Central Area venue.
- The October meeting is in the evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and is a dinner potluck.
- The July meeting is held outdoors in a central area park and is a potluck picnic with family members invited.
- There is no meeting in August.
Please see the website calendar for meeting topics and additional details.
