Background: Lights On Afterschool is a national celebration to call attention to the importance of afterschool programs for America’s children, youth, families and communities. In Washington State, more than 347,000 children and youth are unsupervised afterschool. Nationwide, more than 15.1 million children are left alone. Lights On Afterschool is an opportunity to raise awareness among all sectors of the important role afterschool programs play in keeping kids safe, help working families and inspire learning by providing critical academic, social, and emotional support.
The first Lights On Afterschool celebration, a project of the Afterschool Alliance, was launched in October 2000 with celebrations in 1,200 communities all over the country. Today, more than 7,500 Lights On Afterschool rallies are held annually, attracting 1 million Americans. Lights On Afterschool happens in October.
School's Out Washington's Hall of Fame Champions: This year, as in years past, we will be honoring our 2011 Afterschool Hall of Fame Champions.
