In Looking Back, Facing Forward we invite you to explore, connect and share out the many strategies your program uses to elevate the field of expanded learning opportunities (ELOs).
We cannot build this movement in isolation. How can we uproot inequities, nurture solid partnerships, and ultimately allow our communities to flourish?
The building blocks lay before us and we’d like to highlight a few of our speakers who truly seek to shift the systems ahead. With workshops on fostering strong partnerships, expanding advocacy, and storytelling through evaluations — you will not want to miss these sessions below!
Powerful Partnerships: How Can Schools, Families and Communities Build Capacity for Student Success from Colina Bruce, lead of Seattle University Youth Initiative’s K12 Team.
There are many ways to understand family engagement and partnership. How does racial equity, implicit bias, organizational culture, policies and practice affect family engagement and leadership? This interactive workshop will explore these systemic barriers, as well as identify opportunities for families, schools and community collaboration through a dual capacity framework. We will probe the 4 main concepts identified in the framework, and explore implementation through the lens of the Seattle University Youth Initiative. Participants will learn and discuss practical ways to establish and sustain authentic partnership connections, and by the end of the session, will have at least three new tips, strategies or approaches they can immediately implement in their local district, school or community organization.

Advocacy Strategies to Support Expanded Learning from Eric Gurna of LA’s Best, and David Beard from SOWA.
While California’s system of afterschool programs has been a model for the nation, that system is currently at risk. This workshop will introduce strategies to effectively advocate for afterschool programs. If you want to engage in advocacy but don’t know where to start, this workshop is for you! Participants will learn how to engage with the state legislature, how to rally support from their own city and how to activate their community. Strategies discussed will be universally applicable.
This session will help participants affirm young people's cultures and intersectional identities by identifying strategies to showcase young people's voices and stories which is critical to authentic advocacy.

Incorporating an Equity Lens into Program Evaluation: Measuring What Matters, from Corey Newhouse and Da’Shon Carr, Public Profit.
Expanded learning programs are increasingly focused on equity, such as by improving access to high quality out-of-school time programs or assuring that programs are responsive to the unique interests and needs of diverse communities. Tailoring programs’ evaluation design to suit these goals is a key part of the overall strategy, yet it can be tough to know where to start, particularly for programs with limited time and resources. In this session, presenters will share a flexible framework for incorporating an equity lens into evaluation, along with a variety of practical strategies programs can use to solicit meaningful input from participants and stakeholders.
