I am very excited about the accomplishments of this year’s Quality Enhancement (QE) grant recipients. With support from the Department of Early Learning, SOWA awarded 10 sites with $3,000 grants to improve program quality. This year’s sites were not only diverse in geographic location but also in how they used the grant funds, which ranged from professional development for school-age staff to educational field trips. I’d like to take the opportunity to highlight one of the sites that received funding this year. For a summary of all the amazing QE grantees follow this link.
Kid’s Co. at John Muir Elementary School
QE funds provided more STEM opportunities at Kid’s Company’s licensed school-age program at John Muir Elementary School. In addition to new educational equipment and materials, the Center’s staff received professional development focused on STEM education. Funds were also used to revamp the Center’s outdoor gardening area. Students came up with a list of produce they wanted to see grow in the garden: peas, tomatoes, strawberries, flowers, and more. They went on a walking field trip to Lowes to purchase the seeds and plant starts.
“I loved seeing the kids expression when we [brought] out the new materials. They all stood up and were so interested. I’m learning too.” -Amanda Armstrong, Kids Co staff
