Common Core Meetings Support Students & Families
by School's Out Washington | | Posted under
Over the past month, School’s Out Washington has partnered with community organizations and schools in South King County and Yakima to provide information and resources related to the Common Core State Standards, specifically in helping families advocate for their children with these new standards in place.
The recent PTA event in Yakima at the end of April brought together more than 100 parents and family members from the Spanish-speaking community. The event held at McKinley Elementary School provided resources on a range of topics to engage parents in their children’s school experience, including a presentation by School’s Out Washington’s Lynne Tucker on the Common Core.
The Common Core State Standards will be fully implemented in the next school year, so ensuring that parents and families understand the standards and what they mean for students is critical. Latino students are one of the groups impacted by the widening opportunity gap. Engagement efforts around understanding Common Core and other education efforts must be inclusive of the growing Spanish-speaking population in order to support these students and ensure their success and connection to the broader school community.
Take a moment to read this story on the Yakima event and why it is so important for communities and parents to understand Common Core and engage in education issues to support their children’s achievement.
School’s Out Washington also has upcoming workshops on Common Core in Ellensburg and the Tri-Cities. Check out our workshops webpage for more details.
