Let's Meet Kristin Brewster, Program Quality Coordinator
by School's Out Washington | | Posted under
Kristin Brewster works with the Youth Program Quality Initiative to support programs throughout Washington in their journey through the assess-plan-improve process. Let's took a moment to ask Kristen about herself and what brought her to SOWA.
Where are you from?
I’m from Kent, but I’ve lived in Seattle since 2008 when I stayed in my sweet friend’s studio apartment on Capitol Hill so I could work in a summer program in the BIG city. I had a futon in the kitchen and my clothes in the cabinets--no joke. Now I live in a tiny house in the south end, so I think I’m really moving up in the world!
What do you like to do in your own time?
My pals and I went in on a “yacht” (a 12-foot inflatable island), so a perfect day for me is spent floating on Lake Washington. I also love to sing, sew, and cook. I consider a dance fitness class or a local music show my favorite forms of self-care. Whenever I get a chance, I love to visit Orcas Island, where I was a camp counselor back in the day. It’s my favorite place in the world!
What brought you to SOWA?
I’ve been admiring SOWA from afar since I started in Youth Development with the Y. SOWA’s fierce commitment to racial justice and quality programming for all youth were an inspiration when I was running after school programs in Seattle and later as a mentor to high school students in Skyway. Now, as the program quality coordinator, I am so excited to begin working with the leaders in the field I love.
Tell us one thing you are proud of.
I am proud of the commitment I’ve made to serve youth in King County. I am also deeply inspired by the resilience, hope, and incredible achievements of the young people I’ve worked with over the years. There’s nothing better to me than being out at the grocery store and hearing a “Ms. Kristin, I got into college!” or “I got the job!”
