Jon SayerJon Sayer just joined School’s Out in late February as our new Database and Web Communications Coordinator. He is responsible for all aspects of

Where are you from?

I grew up in Renton, WA, but I was born in Vancouver, BC. I’ve lived in Seattle since 2009 (with an interruption between 2011 and 2013 when I lived in Romania).

What do you like to do in your own time?

I’d like to tell you that I write read science fiction and spend my weekends hiking Washington’s wild places. Which is true, I love to do those things. But more often than not, I’m watching Youtube videos and playing video games. Before I was at School’s Out, I spent my days learning new technologies in the web development field, such as jQuery. Lately, I have been spending my break times learning Spanish on Duolingo.

What brought you to SOWA?

From 2011 to 2013 I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Romania. There, I was responsible for teaching English to Romanian middle schoolers both in school, after school, and in the summer. I feel like I did as good a job as I could, but I could have done more if only I’d had better and more thorough training. When I found the posting for my position online, I researched School’s Out a bit and discovered their (our?) mission of providing training to after school and youth professionals. I knew it was a mission I could believe in because I understood the value of that training.

Tell us one thing that you are proud of.

Many things, but most of all is Teach Like A PCV, a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teaching resources site developed by me and other Peace Corps volunteers from Romania. I proud of this site because it’s well organized and designed for the people who are using it in mind.
