Upcoming Event Celebrates Season of Giving

Here’s an upcoming event and a way to celebrate a season of not only receiving, but also giving to make our communities stronger. This event is taking place at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Visitor Center in Seattle.
To celebrate the ways families can give back to their communities, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Visitor Center invites families to “Family Day: The Give Effect” – the fourth in a series of free, interactive events for all ages. The all-day event is designed to show families how simple, inspiring and fun it is to give back, and was preceded by a one-month giving campaign running from November 29-December 24. By exploring the Visitor Center on Family Day, families can discover causes that matter to them, and learn ways that they can give back to their communities through inspirational activities.
As part of The Give Effect, over thirty Seattle high school students are working together to inspire 1,000 acts of kindness this holiday season. This diverse group of students believes that big things come from small things and that their individual actions can make a difference. As a group the teens have participated in many charitable activities like sorting clothes for Wellspring Family Services’ baby boutique – completing two weeks of work in two hours! In addition, each of the teens has pledged an act of kindness to focus on in December such as:
- Helping someone who is being bullied
- Posting about giving back on Twitter and Facebook
- Encouraging someone who is down
- Buying someone behind them in line a coffee
The Give Effect culminates on Saturday, December 28th with a free Family Day event at the Visitor Center, tailored for all ages, which will include hands-on activities, live performances and inspiring speakers.
At the event, the teens will also be “auctioning” off 1,000 acts of kindness and encouraging the public to participate in the giving campaign. The community can help the teen committee on their mission by pledging their acts of kindness via social media using the hashtag #TheGiveEffect.
