Protect 21st Century Community Learning Centers From Cuts
As the new congress begins their work in Washington D.C, SOWA is carefully monitoring the 21st Century Community Learning Centers budget allocation. Even a 10% cut to this program could result in a loss of high-quality afterschool programming for 1500 youth in our state, equivalent to an entire small town losing access to afterschool and summer programming for its children.
We're asking Congress to maintain the 2016 funding level for this program, protecting it from cuts. Please let your elected officials in the nation’s capital know how important maintaining current funding for this program is!

Ensure $4m for Expanded Learning Opportunities Initiative
Research shows that high-quality expanded learning programs improve attendance and grades while building the social-emotional skills needed to succeed in school and in life. Yet too few youth in Washington have access to the high-quality expanded learning programs—after school and in the summer.
A $4M state investment in the existing Expanded Learning Opportunities Initiative will leverage private sector investments to allow it to expand from reaching 50 programs and approximately 2,000 youth to 260 programs and 10,000 in six counties.
