Support the ELO Quality Initiative
Please ensure that $1 million for the Expanded Learning Opportunities Quality Initiative is included in the 2021 Supplemental Washington State budget. Research shows that high-quality expanded learning programs improve attendance and grades, yet too few youth in Washington have access to these programs—after school and in the summer. When expanded learning is supported to achieve a high standard of quality, our state can narrow the opportunity gap and develop tomorrow’s leaders.
The $750k in state funding which was provided annually the past four years allowed programs to improve their work with the thousands of youth they serve. A $1M state investment in the Expanded Learning Opportunities Initiative will leverage private sector investments to support school-age child care providers as well foster and adjudicated youth.
High-quality afterschool and summer programs teach everything from robotics and website development, to creative writing and the arts, equipping our youth with skills that not only improve grades, but create life-long passions. These are also critical for working families, ensuring that parents can remain in the workforce without their kids being unattended and unsafe.
We thank you for your support of our children and hope you will fight to make sure afterschool and summer programs continue to be a vibrant component of education in Washington State.
